Research ethics in a multilingual world: A guide to reflecting on language decisions in all disciplines (co-hosted by the Department of Language Studies (Umeå University, Sweden), and the Language and Education Network (University of Exeter, UK). Authors: Gabriela Meier, Paulette van der Voet, Tian Yan.
The authors will present a new article in which they argue that ethical decisions related to languages occur at every stage of the research process and beyond. Based on a literature review they show that ethical dilemmas related to linguistic diversity and use of languages are not only of an organizational nature (e.g., ensuring participants can understand what the research is about), but they are also of a social (e.g., developing trust and relationships in research teams) and ideological nature (e.g., awareness of power structures and diverse worldviews). In order to support researchers in globalized contexts, this article offers a reflective framework that complements regulatory guidance issued by ethical bodies and facilitates a deeper awareness of ethical implications related to language decisions in a multilingual world.
